A Competency Based Method of Evaluating Student Learning - A Recorded Content Discussion

DATE & TIME

Tuesday, April 11, 12noon Eastern
(Duration: 1 hour)

DESCRIPTION

The AACNs new Essentials (2021) moves curriculum development towards a competency-based model for skill acquisition. A competency-based approach to course engagement and student assessment will be presented. Recorded content discussions are an augmented video-recording alternative to traditional small-group discussion. They were incorporated into an online, graduate-level organizational management course to replace a discussion board assignment. Feedback on the new assignment indicated student satisfaction with recorded content discussions, citing usefulness in helping them apply course content to real-world organizational management problems and expressing their preference for recorded content discussions over traditional post/respond-to-post discussion board assignments.

LEARNER OBJECTIVES

  1. Review principles of competency-based assessment.
  2. Apply concept of competency-based assessment to a recorded content discussion activity.
